What Are Negative Edge Pools?

The term “negative edge” refers to the vanishing edge design feature that offers the illusion of water pouring over the edge of one pool and into another body of water. It can often appear that water is pouring down a hillside. Often times, this design is under names like infinity edge, zero edge or perimeter overflow.

Europeans have been building these designs for over 100 years. The first of this design in the U.S. was made in the 1950s, when architect John Lautner put his design talent into creating the ‘Silvertop’ for a private residence in Silver Lake, California. Interestingly, the design did not become popular in the United States until the early 90’s.

negative edge pools

Negative edge pools require exact design and workmanship standards at all stages of construction. Trust only professionals with the proper experience. The sizing of the catch pool, the overflow gutter, and the displacement of the surge vessel require exact engineering calculations during design and construction.

Fortunately, SSG specializes in the design and construction of negative edge pools. SSG has been serving New England and setting the construction standard for gunite swimming pools and spas since 1975. We reinvented the pool build process by refusing to outsource any construction on our pools. You will never see a subcontractor on SSG’s projects, which allows us to ensure top quality and accountability for our clients.
